About Shankaracharya Temple

Perched on the summit of Gopadri Hill, at about 1,100 feet above Srinagar, the Shankaracharya Temple is the city’s most revered Hindu shrine. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this sacred temple is a highlight of many Kashmir tour packages and a significant stopover for pilgrims embarking on the Amarnath Yatra.

The temple’s origins are linked to the Mauryan era, with its earliest foundation believed to have been laid by Emperor Ashoka’s son. The site gained prominence when the great Hindu philosopher Adi Shankaracharya is said to have meditated here for several days. The current stone structure is attributed to his efforts during the 9th century CE.

Today, the temple is visited not only for worship but also for its ancient stone carvings, inscriptions, and breathtaking panoramic views of Srinagar and Dal Lake. The short trek up the hill, followed by moments of peace in this spiritual atmosphere, makes it one of the most rewarding places to visit in Kashmir.
