About Apharwat Peak

Perched at an altitude of 4,200 meters, Apharwat Peak is one of Gulmarg’s most captivating attractions and a must-visit for adventure seekers and honeymooners. Known for its year-round snowfall, it is regarded as one of the best skiing destinations in India. The famous two-phase Gulmarg Gondola conveniently connects visitors to the peak, located just 13 km from Gulmarg town.

Surrounded by snow-draped mountains, lush meadows, and scenic valleys, Apharwat Peak offers a perfect setting for couples seeking romance and thrill. Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, or enjoying a traditional sledge ride, there are endless opportunities for adventure. For a unique experience, try sledging down the slopes or exploring the mystical Alpather Lake, which stays frozen for most of the year.

Main Highlights

Climb to 4,390 meters and glide down Asia’s longest ski slope with breathtaking Himalayan panoramas.

Take a 12-minute Gondola ride on Phase 2 for sweeping views of the Pir Panjal ranges and vast snowfields.

Witness the Ningle Nallah stream, originating from Apharwat, adding charm to the valley’s landscape.

Try sledging from Apharwat to Seven Springs, an adventurous ride paired with stunning mountain scenery.

Visit the frozen Alpather Lake at the base of the peak, where ducks walking on ice create a magical winter wonderland.

How to Reach

By Gondola: The primary and most thrilling way to reach the peak is via the Gulmarg Gondola. Phase 2 of the cable car ride takes you directly to the Apharwat summit area.

By Road: The road journey from Gulmarg town covers about 40 km via Apharwat Hill Road and takes around 1.5 hours, though this route is less common for tourists compared to the Gondola.

Travel Tips

Wear layered winter clothing and sturdy boots as temperatures drop drastically at high altitudes.

Arrive before 2 PM since the Gondola’s second phase often closes early.

Move at a relaxed pace to avoid altitude sickness, as oxygen levels are lower above 13,000 feet.

Book Gondola tickets online in advance to avoid long waiting queues, especially in peak season.

Negotiate at local snow gear rental shops at the base to avoid overpaying.

Carry cash, water, and light snacks as facilities are very limited at the summit.
